Challenge
With limited wood supply and electricity, the people of Gaza experience harsh and unforgiving winters. Due to military interventions and occupation, the living situation for many inhabitants of Gaza is dire. Houses are filled with holes in the walls and roofs, or are simply flimsy trailers which may sink in the rain. Restrictions on power and resources make improvements on living difficult, and staying warm, harder. It is important that children, especially, have the resources needed to stay warm, which helps protect their health and allows them to focus their energy on important necessities like going to school. Additionally, the psychological effect of having support as well as access to basic materials to live is important for fueling the hearts of a generation of those who hold inspiration, hope, and the ability to build a better future.
Solution
Winter clothing items such as jackets, shoes, socks, jeans, and woolen underclothes were produced from local Gazan factories that had previously been closed in the recent period because of the deterioration of the economic situation in Gaza. They were able to temporarily re-open for this project. Jackets protect against the cold wind and rains, while proper foot protection keeps children safer during deteriorated ground conditions brought on by winter storms. Jeans and underclothes provide an essential level of comfort and warmth during this challenging time.
Distribution
A total of 3,149 winter bundles were distributed amongst areas in Rafah (Al-Maswasi, Al-Shoka, etc), Northern Gaza (Jabalia, Biet Lahia, etc), and Gaza City ( Al-Shatee Camp, Al-Naser, etc).
Long-Term Impact
The resources provided in our Save Gaza Winter Projects are made from durable materials, allowing them to be used for many winters. The physical and emotional impact of support and warmth projects like these provide is invaluable. It can give a generation of children the hope of a brighter future for many years to come. Additionally, we run this fundraiser on an annual basis, expanding the distribution of these essential winter materials to many more children each year.
